Cape Breton – Sydney and Cabot Trail

We left PEI and took the ferry to Cape Breton…our destination was Sydney, founded by the British in 1785.  Who knew it would offer rock music and ribs?? During both the First and Second World Wars, it was a major staging area for England-bound convoys.  The decline in the steel business in the post war years has changed the face of Sydney….tourism is now the largest draw.

We stayed in a wonderful B&B just steps from the ocean shore.  Our first evening we walked to a concert in the park nearby.  The second night, we were lucky enough to be in town for the annual rib festival that drew thousands of folks from everywhere.

We drove the 7-hour drive on Cabot Trail and preferred the western shore.  It was very dramatic….steep red cliffs pushing up from the ocean waters, whale-size granite boulders weathered white beached themselves at the shoreline….one would swear you were on the coast route in Northern California around Big Sur.  Shocking, electric blue sky, verdant green fir trees growing right down to the edge of the deep azure sea.
