Louisbourg Fortress Cape Breton

Want to time travel?  If you do, be sure to visit Louisbourg Fortress, founded by the French in 1713 and named for Louis XIV..  Oh, the guns are not loaded unless you want them to be….they offer the opportunity to dress in period costume and fire a cannon and musket!

It is like walking through a movie set…the actors dressed in period costume are going about their daily lives; gardening, cooking, baking, sewing, weaving, candle making, playing music, blacksmithing, servants cleaning houses, babysitting the brood, drinking and guarding the fort.  The spoken word is in period as well.  If you stop them, they will talk in detail about their lives, who they are, how they spend their days in the fort and even give you some gossip.  However, refer to present day or ask them a question (other than where are the washrooms) about cell phone reception or television; they stay in character and don’t have a clue.  They even offer an opportunity to play a prisoner for the day complete with iron chains and public punishment…..I don’t get that one.
